An exercise to help you spring clean your whole life
It’s June. I know that it’s a bit late for spring cleaning (who actually DOES spring cleaning? Does anyone?) but frankly, it’s far too cold to be summer and this is a great exercise to do at any time of year.
I’ve just done it, and answered no to the question: “My home is clutter free and clean”. It’s clean (just don’t look too closely at the skirting boards) but it has far too much clutter for my liking. Some of which comes from living with two hoarders (I am a culler). It’s not quite “tip “status, but it is definitely not how I would want it to be. I get house envy a lot. Often when I go to other people’s houses, and they just have that “artfully stylish” thing going on. Or when I see rooms on Instagram which just look tidy, clutter free and full of plants. My friends seem to be much better at this than me.
I have an old school friend whose house is like this and I call her house “The Swedish house” as she’s always got some scandi looking, unique bargain that looks stunning, and cost £5 from a charity shop. Or my friend Farrah’s house which is just gorgeous and beautifully curated and feels like a home. She used to be editor of Elle, she’s not a good comparison for me, but I can’t help it.
My house is a bit tatty round the edges and really needs some love. Which I am too tired to give it.
What I really want is Dilly Carter from Stacey Solomon’s Sort your life out to come and organise my house for me and put all my nuts and seeds into beautifully organised stacks, so that I can open my kitchen cupboards and not have walnuts cascade on top my head from half empty packets. Also, empty packets. Who puts empty packets back in the cupboard? My daughter and ex husband, that’s who. Grrr.
Anyway, enough about me, this exercise is really useful and can help you get your life in balance and work out how to be more fulfilled. What you want to do is to pick ONE area (that matters to you) where you get a low score where you want to take some action. Start small. Baby steps. Remember the brilliant Mel Robbins’ advice to take a lego brick sized action. And do NOT think you have to take tons of action all at the same time. Unless you’ve got tons of energy. In which case, crack on my friend.
